This paper presents the background, theoretical modeling, operation and the current outlook of the use of riblets as a passive method for turbulent drag reduction. Some explanations of the mechanism involved obtained under different perspectives are also discussed. Furthermore, it is suggested the application of the method to bodies which surfaces are affected by pressure and friction forces because the better performance of the technique reported in recent researches.
