Abstract

Damages on agricultural industry products (grains and seeds) are mainly due to improper mechanical handling during harvesting, drying, and storage stages. Factors that lead to modification of grain mechanical properties are the main topic of study in the literature on agricultural processes improvement. Early identification of these factors allows timely decision making on the productive flow that leads to mitigation of significant economic losses. This study aims to provide an overview of these factors and the methods used to measure them. The literature related to most researched grains and seeds, its physical-mechanical properties, and damages that could occur from harvesting to storage, has been considered as an analytical spectrum. A total of 94 references between 1971 and 2018 were revised, of which 51 were about soybeans and 43 about other grains and seeds. As a result of these references examination, based on common analysis dimensions, the similarities among them are stated, and methods mostly used by authors to measure mechanical properties variation are identified.
